Think Rationally – Lose More Weight

Posted on November 17th, 2011 by Matt Schoeneberger

While watching a video of 1%er Peter Schiff at the Occupy Wall Street movement, I was reminded how few people seem to possess the skills necessary to have a calm, rational thought process about many topics. Politics is one of these topics. Weight loss is another.
Let’s discuss a few scenarios where rational and flexible thinking can help weight loss. Read more »

How Often Should I Check My Weight?

Posted on November 12th, 2011 by Jeff Thiboutot M.S.

Checking your weight is one type of self-monitoring, which falls under the umbrella of Self-Regulation theory of behavior (Bandura). Other common self-monitoring variables include tracking daily calorie intake, activity levels, blood pressure, and sleep patterns. The question at hand is if checking your weight regularly will help with the weight loss process as well as help with maintaining a healthy weight. Read more »

Down With Shaving Cream

Posted on November 7th, 2011 by Matt Schoeneberger

This is a new category here at It’s currently called Matt’s Musings, but that is subject to change. These posts won’t show up on our homepage as they are definitely not evidence-based weight loss content but rather are just thoughts, feelings, or randomness about any subject I wish to write about. Sometimes they may be evidence-based posts in a realm other than weight management.

I hate shaving. Hate it. I don’t have much in the way of facial hair growth and I don’t envy those who do. For a while, years ago, I tried an electric razor but that was just as uncomfortable as anything else. Somehow I stumbled upon some articles about shaving without shaving cream. I think the idea was that much of the irritation that comes after shaving was actually being caused by the stuff we put on our face before, during and after shaving, rather than by the process itself. I’m not sure I believe that, or care, but some time ago I tried shaving without shaving cream.

I don’t remember how long ago that was, but it’s been more than a few years now and I don’t see the point in starting to use shaving cream anytime soon. Hot water and a disposal razor (and I’m talking the 6 for $2.99 kind) is all I need. I like to think I’m a pretty simple guy and I just don’t like the idea of spending money on crap I don’t need because some commercial told me to. Down with shaving cream!

Anthony Colpo on MAD and Fat Loss

Posted on November 6th, 2011 by Matt Schoeneberger

Anthony Colpo writes some great, evidence-based articles on his blog. His most recent, as of today, is a relatively quick piece about the supposed metabolic advantage of low carb diets, the real benefit to low carb diets, and a quick quib about what it really takes to lose a substantial amount of fat.

My favorite few words:

“In other words, find a dietary and exercise regimen that allows you to maintain the required calorie deficit and stick with it so you can reach your desired weight.”

If I haven’t written that exact sentence over the past 2 year (someone read through all my posts and let me know), I should have. There is some fat loss gold right there.

How the Hell do I Break This Weight Loss Plateau?

Posted on November 1st, 2011 by Matt Schoeneberger

Does this sound familiar?

“I started a paleo/low carb/low fat/vegan diet and it worked for a while. Then, for some reason it stopped working. I hit a plateau and didn’t loose [sic] any weight for 6 weeks.”

This is fairly common, so if this sounds like something you’ve been through or something you’re going through right now, don’t feel alone. Let’s talk about what’s going on. Read more »
